28 Jonatan svarte Saul: "David ba innstendig om tillatelse fra meg til å dra til Betlehem.

29 Han sa: 'La meg gå, siden vår familie har en ofring i byen, og min bror har befalt meg å delta. Nå, hvis jeg har funnet nåde i dine øyne, la meg slippe unna så jeg kan se mine brødre.' Av den grunn har han ikke kommet til kongens bord."

Da flammet Sauls vrede opp mot Jonatan, og han sa til ham: "Du sønn av en villfaren og opprørsk kvinne! Vet jeg ikke at du velger Isais sønn til din egen skam og til skammen for din mors vanære?

31 For så lenge Isais sønn lever på jorden, vil du og ditt kongedømme ikke bli etablert. Nå, send noen og bring ham til meg, for han er dømt til å dø!"

32 Men Jonatan svarte sin far Saul og spurte: "Hvorfor skal han dø? Hva har han gjort?"
