1 Så kom mennene fra Kirjat-Jearim og hentet Herrens ark. De brakte den til Abinadabs hus på høyden og innviet hans sønn Eleasar til å vokte Herrens ark.

2 Arken ble værende i Kirjat-Jearim i lang tid – i alt tjue år. Da vendte hele Israels hus tilbake til Herren med sorg.

Samuel sa til hele Israels folk: «Hvis dere virkelig vender tilbake til Herren av hele deres hjerte, så fjern de fremmede gudene og Astartene fra blant dere. Forplikt dere til Herren og tjen Ham alene, så vil Han redde dere fra filisternes hånd.»

4 Så fjernet israelittene Baalene og Astartene og tjente Herren alene.

5 Da sa Samuel: «Samle hele Israel i Mispa, så vil jeg be til Herren for dere.»
