11 «Jeg døper dere med vann til omvendelse. Men etter meg kommer en som er mektigere enn jeg, og jeg er ikke verdig til å bære hans sandaler. Han skal døpe dere med Den Hellige Ånd og ild.

12 Han har kasteskovlen i hånden, og han skal rense treskeplassen grundig, samle hveten i låven og brenne opp agnene med en ild som aldri slukner.»

På den tiden kom Jesus fra Galilea til Jordan for å bli døpt av Johannes.

14 Men Johannes prøvde å hindre ham og sa: «Jeg trenger å bli døpt av deg, og så kommer du til meg?»

15 Jesus svarte ham: «La det nå skje; for slik er det riktig av oss å oppfylle all rettferdighet.» Da samtykket Johannes.
