1 I det femtende året av keiser Tiberius' regjering, da Pontius Pilatus var landshøvding i Judea, Herodes var landsfyrste i Galilea, hans bror Filip var landsfyrste i området Iturea og Trakonitis, og Lysanias var landsfyrste i Abilene,

på den tiden da Annas og Kaifas var yppersteprester, kom Guds ord til Johannes, Sakarjas sønn, i ødemarken.

3 Han dro rundt i hele området omkring Jordan og forkynte en omvendelsens dåp til syndenes forlatelse.

4 Som det står skrevet i boken med profeten Jesajas ord:
“En røst roper i ødemarken:
‘Gjør Herrens vei klar;
gjør i ørkenen en rett vei for vår Gud.
