9 Hele folket i alle Israels stammer kranglet og sa: "Kongen reddet oss fra våre fienders hånd og reddet oss fra filisternes hånd, men nå har han flyktet ut av landet fra Absalom.

10 Og Absalom, som vi salvet over oss, er død i kamp. Hvorfor sier dere da ingenting om å bringe kongen tilbake?"

Da sendte kong David bud til prestene Sadok og Abjatar og sa: "Tal til Judas eldste og si: 'Hvorfor er dere de siste til å bringe kongen tilbake til hans hus, siden hele Israel har kommet til kongen, for å bringe ham tilbake til hans hus?

12 Dere er mine slektninger; dere er mitt eget kjøtt og blod. Hvorfor skulle dere da være de siste til å bringe kongen tilbake?'

13 Og si til Amasa: 'Er du ikke mitt ben og mitt kjøtt? Gud gjøre så mot meg og mer også hvis du ikke skal være hærfører for meg kontinuerlig i stedet for Joab.'"
