25 De sa: “Du har reddet våre liv! Må vi finne nåde i vår herres øyne; vi vil være faraos tjenere.”

26 Josef fastsatte en lov angående Egyptens land, fortsatt i kraft i dag, at en femtedel av avlingen tilhører farao. Bare prestenes land ble ikke faraos.

Israelittene bosatte seg i Egypt, i regionen Gosen. De kjøpte eiendom og var fruktbare, og de ble svært mange.

28 Jakob levde i Egypt i sytten år, og hans levetid var 147 år.

29 Da tiden nærmet seg for Israel å dø, kalte han til seg sin sønn Josef og sa: “Hvis jeg har funnet nåde i dine øyne, legg din hånd under mitt lår og lov å vise meg godhet og trofasthet. Ikke begrav meg i Egypt,
