11 Alle krigsfolkene med ham dro opp og nærmet seg byen, og de slo leir på nordsiden av Ai, med en dal mellom dem og byen.
12 Han tok omkring fem tusen mann og satte dem i bakhold mellom Betel og Ai, på vestsiden av byen.
Så tok folket sine posisjoner, med hovedleiren nord for byen og bakholdet vest for den. Josva tilbrakte den natten i dalen.
14 Da kongen av Ai så dette, skyndte han og alle hans menn fra byen seg tidlig ut for å møte Israel i kamp på det bestemte stedet foran ørkensletten, men han visste ikke at det var et bakhold mot ham bak byen.
15 Josva og hele Israel lot som om de var slått foran dem og flyktet mot ødemarken.
