8 Herrens vrede ble opptent mot Israel, og Han solgte dem i hendene på Kusjan-Risjatajim, kongen av Aram Naharaim, og israelittene tjente ham i åtte år.

9 Da israelittene ropte til Herren, reiste Han opp en befrier for dem, Otniel, sønn av Kenas, Kalebs yngre bror, som frelste dem.

Herrens Ånd kom over ham, og han ble Israels dommer og dro ut i krig. Herren overga Kusjan-Risjatajim, kongen av Aram, i hans hender, og Otniel seiret over ham.

11 Landet hadde fred i førti år, inntil Otniel, sønn av Kenas, døde.

12 Igjen gjorde israelittene det som var ondt i Herrens øyne, og på grunn av dette styrket Herren Eglon, kongen av Moab, mot Israel.
