1 Paulus, en apostel av Kristus Jesus ved Guds vilje, i samsvar med løftet om livet som finnes i Kristus Jesus,

2 Til Timoteus, mitt kjære barn: Må du motta nåde, barmhjertighet og fred fra Gud Faderen og Kristus Jesus, vår Herre.

Jeg takker Gud, som jeg tjener med en ren samvittighet, slik mine forfedre gjorde, når jeg stadig husker deg i mine bønner både natt og dag,

4 lengter etter å se deg, når jeg minnes dine tårer, så jeg kan bli fylt med glede.

5 For jeg er oppmerksom på den oppriktige troen i deg, som først bodde i din bestemor Lois og din mor Eunike, og jeg er sikker på at den også er i deg.
