Faith and doubt
Goal: The young people are allowed to doubt, and see that doubt has a place in the Bible.
Texts: Johannes 20,24–29 · Salmene 13 · Markus 9,24
Plan (60 min)
- 10 minYes, no, maybe. Stand at the yes, no or maybe corner for statements about faith. Nobody has to defend themselves.
- 20 minThomas and the psalmist. Read John 20:24–29 and Psalm 13. What does doubt do, and how do Jesus and God answer? Open
- 15 minWhat do you need in order to believe?. Write down three things that strengthen and three that weaken your faith.
- 10 minAsk the Bible. Ask a difficult question and read which verses and views the answer points to. Open
- 5 minClosing. Prayer: “I believe; help my unbelief” (Mark 9:24).
Questions for conversation
- Is doubt the opposite of faith?
- Who can you share your doubt with?
Homework
- Homework: write down a question you have no answer to and bring it next time.
The sessions are drafts written by us, made to be used and changed. Adapt them to the group, and choose texts from the church or tradition you belong to.
