Baptism and communion

Goal: The young people read what the texts say about baptism and communion, and talk about what it means to them.

Texts: Matteus 28,18–20 · Matteus 3,13–17 · 1. Korinter 11,23–26

Plan (60 min)

  1. 10 minWhat do you remember?. What do you know about your own baptism? Ask at home beforehand if possible.
  2. 20 minRead the texts. Read about Jesus’ baptism, the baptism command and the institution of communion. What happens, and what is said? Open
  3. 15 minDifferent churches, different answers. Churches answer differently about infant baptism and the meaning of communion. What do you see in the texts that gives different answers? Open
  4. 10 minSign and word. What is a sign? What do water, bread and wine mean here?
  5. 5 minClosing. Silence. Read Matthew 28:20 aloud.

Questions for conversation

  • What does it mean to belong?
  • What would you ask the priest or leader?

Homework

  • Homework: ask an adult what baptism or communion means to them.

The sessions are drafts written by us, made to be used and changed. Adapt them to the group, and choose texts from the church or tradition you belong to.
