19 Så snart han gjorde dette, reiste mennene i bakholdet seg raskt fra sitt sted og løp for å innta byen, erobret den og satte den raskt i brann.
20 Mennene i Ai snudde seg og så røyken fra byen stige opp til himmelen, og de hadde ingen mulighet til å flykte i noen retning; israelittene som hadde flyktet til ødemarken snudde seg mot sine forfølgere.
Da Josva og hele Israel så at bakholdet hadde erobret byen og at røyken steg opp fra den, snudde de seg og angrep mennene i Ai.
22 De andre kom ut av byen mot dem, så de ble fanget i midten, med israelittene på begge sider. Israel slo dem ned, og etterlot verken overlevende eller flyktninger.
23 Men de tok kongen av Ai levende og førte ham til Josva.
