19 Kvinnen tok et dekke og bredte det over brønnens åpning og strødde korn på det, så ingenting ble kjent.
20 Da kom Absaloms tjenere til kvinnen i huset og sa: "Hvor er Ahimaas og Jonatan?" Kvinnen sa til dem: "De har krysset vannbekken." Og de lette og fant dem ikke, og vendte tilbake til Jerusalem.
Etter at de hadde gått, kom mennene opp av brønnen, og gikk og fortalte kong David. De sa til David: "Reis deg og gå over vannet raskt, for slik har Akitofel rådet mot deg."
22 Så reiste David og alle folket som var med ham seg og krysset Jordan. Ved daggry var det ikke én person igjen som ikke hadde krysset Jordan.
23 Nå, da Akitofel så at hans råd ikke ble fulgt, salte han eselet sitt og reiste og dro hjem til sin by. Han satte sitt hus i stand og hengte seg. Slik døde han og ble begravet i sin fars grav.
