21 Israel og filisterne var trukket opp i slagorden, hær mot hær.

22 Da lot David bagasjen være hos bagasjevokteren, løp til slaglinjen og gikk inn for å hilse på sine brødre.

Mens han snakket med dem, se, da kom kjempen, filisteren fra Gat ved navn Goliat, opp fra filisternes hær, og han talte de samme ordene som før; og David hørte ham.

24 Da alle Israels menn så ham, trakk de seg tilbake fra ham i stor frykt.

25 Israels menn sa: "Har du sett denne mannen som kommer opp? Sannelig, han kommer opp for å utfordre Israel. Og det skal være slik at kongen vil berike den mannen som dreper ham med store rikdommer, gi ham sin datter, og gjøre hans fars hus fritt i Israel."
