The Bible is not one book, but a library of 66 books written by many authors over more than a thousand years. It is divided into two: the Old Testament with 39 books and the New Testament with 27.
The Old Testament
It begins with the five books of Moses, which tell of creation, Abraham and the exodus from Egypt, and give the laws. Then come the history books about the people of Israel, the wisdom books (Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes and the Song of Songs) and the prophets.
The New Testament
It opens with the four gospels about the life, death and resurrection of Jesus: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Acts tells how the church grew. Then follow the letters, many of them written by Paul, and John's Revelation at the end.
Different genres need different reading
A story is read as a story, a poem as a poem, and a letter as a letter, written to particular people in a particular situation. It helps to ask: What kind of text is this, and who was it written to?
