The Lord’s Prayer, line by line

The prayer Jesus taught his disciples, explained so that you can pray it with new eyes.

The Lord’s Prayer is in Matthew 6:9–13, and in a shorter form in Luke 11:2–4. Jesus gives it as an answer to the disciples asking him to teach them to pray.

The address

“Our Father in heaven.” We do not pray alone but together, and we address God as a father.

God’s cause first

“Hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done.” The prayer begins with God’s honour and God’s will coming first.

Our needs

“Give us today our daily bread, forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.” Daily food, forgiveness and protection.

The ending

Many know the ending “for yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory”. It is not in the earliest manuscripts of Matthew, and many modern translations therefore put it in brackets or leave it out. It was taken into use in worship early on.
