4 Etter en tid førte ammonittene krig mot Israel.
5 Da ammonittene kjempet mot Israel, dro de eldste i Gilead for å hente Jefta tilbake fra landet Tob.
De henvendte seg til Jefta og sa: «Kom og led oss i kamp mot ammonittene.»
7 Jefta svarte de eldste i Gilead: «Hatet dere meg ikke og drev meg bort fra min fars hus? Hvorfor kommer dere til meg nå når dere er i nød?»
8 De eldste i Gilead sa til Jefta: «Av denne grunn har vi nå vendt tilbake til deg, for at du skal gå med oss og kjempe mot ammonittene og bli vår leder over alle innbyggerne i Gilead.»
