3 og gi dem beskjed om å ta tolv steiner fra midten av Jordan, fra stedet der prestene står fast, og bære dem med dere for å plassere dem på stedet der dere skal overnatte i natt."
4 Så kalte Josva de tolv mennene han hadde utpekt fra Israels sønner, én mann fra hver stamme,
og han sa til dem: "Gå foran Herrens, deres Guds, ark inn i midten av Jordan, og hver av dere løft en stein på skulderen, tilsvarende antallet av Israels stammer.
6 Dette skal tjene som et tegn blant dere. I fremtiden, når deres barn spør: 'Hva betyr disse steinene?'
7 skal dere forklare dem: 'Vannet i Jordan ble stoppet foran Herrens paktsark. Da den krysset Jordan, ble vannet avskåret.' Disse steinene skal være et evig minne for Israels folk."
